Car Free in Raleigh

Living an urban life in a suburban city.

Stuff we’re looking for (downtown).

Does anyone know a place in downtown Raleigh where I can get vegan “parmesan” sprinkles? I asked Capitol City Grocery to carry them, so we’ll see if anything comes of it. In the meantime, anywhere closer than Wade Ave Whole Foods?

(We’re not vegan, but my toddler is allergic to milk and eggs, so we use some vegan products).

How about one of these Wilton long aluminum bread loaf pans? I need something for making sandwich bread, and my loaf pans are all more of a “banana bread” size.

(Yes, I know that I could order it online. I want it now. :-P )

Lastly, any idea where the Raleigh Rickshaws are all hiding? I’d love to go for a test ride.

Hi, I’m one of Susan’s friends from Oklahoma and found your blog via a link on hers. I just wanted to say that living car-free in today’s world is very courageous and I applaud you. I truly don’t think I could do it in North Dakota, at least not in the wintertime. :)

Anyway, have you thought about having your groceries delivered, at least for the once-a-month order? A lot of the mom-and-pop (and maybe even some of the chains) stores still deliver. We have a regional chain up here that will deliver anything you want for a measly fee of $6.00. Totally worth it, and you can order online. Maybe Raleigh has something similar.

I actually did look into it pretty extensively, and lots of our chain grocers do deliver, but none will deliver to our zip code. >:(

I don’t think we have a mom and pop store nearby, except one really tiny place. I will have to poke around a bit more. I’ve actually never been inside it, though my husband has.

Hey - groceries delivered! Have you checked into Lowes Foods? They have a wonderful organic and all natural selection and tend to have a wide delivery range. I’m not sure if you have one “in your area” but you can check. I wonder if the Knightdale one will come down to you - it’s just by 540 on 64 http://www.lowesfoods.com/modules/lowesfoodstogo/

Also, our Food Lion carried rice Parmesan as I recall. I don’t remember if it was vegan, though…

As for the Wilton stuff, I can only think that Michaels or AC Moore would carry, but both are on Capital and both are convenient to bus stops I’d guess. What about a Target?

Geez…you are a saint! I can’t imagine living without my car!!! This is really making me think about it realistically…and the fact that my “Walk Score” was 0 zip zilch LOL

Tara - Lowes, even the Knightdale location, won’t deliver to my zipcode. :( I have considered calling and begging for them to charge me a bigger fee, LOL.

My Food Lion is a bit ghetto, and it’s a good day if they have soy milk and if the produce doesn’t rot within a day. Whee. Sadly, I’m not kidding. Last time we shopped there, the following announcement aired over the loudspeaker:

“Attention all cashiers: When you ring up a customer, make sure there are no unpaid items left under their carts.”

    [pause]

“…and thank you for shopping at Food Lion.”
    (you bunch of thieving thugs.)

    LOL.

I actually need to trek up to AC Moore anyway, to get a Christmas present put together. The Capital Blvd one is right on the bus line, as you said. I’ve just been procrastinating and waiting for the next coupon to come in my mailbox.

(Crap. I just realized that I threw the flier away today.)

You know, I think you’d actually enjoy the car-free thing, if you lived closer to downtown. After a week or so, you just get used to it, and the urge to run out for every little thing goes away.

…and that reminds me, I need to post another blog entry. ;)
