So, we bought a car. And not just a car… something that could rightfully be called a small SUV. A 2004 white Saturn Vue.
It’s a bit of a long story, but the isolation was getting to be too much for me.
I hope to continue to make lots of “car free” trips and to pull my fair share of carpooling, but the reality is, we’re just not ready to live without a car, particularly with a young child. We made it work — for over 3 months — and it did work. But we also gave up a lot of freedom and community to make that happen.
So, maybe I’ll post from time to time, to talk about our car-filled ventures. Or maybe not. We’ll have to see.
P.S. I am doing my first carpool tomorrow morning, taking Mandy and Seamus to La Leche League. They have driven us for several months, so I owe her quite a few favors. ![]()

WOW! whoa! No kidding - not *just* a car
What kind of gas mileage does it get?
Congrats! I’m sure that makes you feel a lot free’er in general!

23 city, 28 highway according to some websites, 19/26 according to the EPA website.
Not too bad for a larger vehicle… I was surprised to see that it beats some larger sedans in the same year, like the Ford Taurus.
Still, it’s the highest mpg vehicle we’ve ever owned, although it will suit our needs for longer than a compact car would have.
(It can easily fit three carseats, whereas our last car was a tight squeeze with two. I also had a really hard time getting kids in and out of carseats in a sedan, because my back isn’t too great. It has been VERY nice to be able to put Malachy in while standing upright.)
